Chapter Twelve

“C’mon, Fenwick,” Nicki said to herself, “pick up. Please pick up.” But his cell was turned off again.

He must be at the castle now, waiting for everything to unfold. I’ve got to get to him. He’s got to pull the book before they find it.

Nicki wanted to hail a cab, but there wasn’t an available one to be seen. She wasn’t far from the bus station, but a quick look at the schedule told her the next coach for Windsor wouldn’t leave for an hour. It will be too late by then.

She continued trying to reach Fenwick by phone. Finally, she got through.

“I’m sorry, Miss Nicki,” he said, “but I had no choice. I was with the—”

“Don’t worry, I’ve got you now.” She moved away from the lineup of people at the station. “I’ll explain everything to you later, but here’s the short version: I broke into Warren Letch’s office, and—”

“You did what?”

“Nevermind. The name of the book is The Secret of the Golden Flower. And the Zidanes—there’s more than one, Fenwick—are going to transfer it to that opium exporter, Osman, on Monday night.”

“The Secret of the—Golden Flower?”

“Yes,” said Nicki. “I overheard two agents—they must be working with the mob. I don’t know their names or faces.”

“Male or female?”

“Two males. Young sounding voices. They had a key for Mr. Letch’s office.” She took another deep breath. “Maybe they’re the ones trying to frame Mr. Letch.”

“Or perhaps they suspect that Letch is working for the mob and they’re trying to find out what he knows about the transfer to Osman,” Fenwick said. “Did you hear anything else?”

“They found a map of the English Channel. And they said something about Penzance. That’s all I could make out.”

“Good work, Miss Nicki. Good work, indeed,” said the butler. “If Warren has some kind of intelligence that concerns the south coast, I think it’s time he tells us about it. One of our senior agents had better talk to him—find out what he knows.”

“Without giving anything away.”

“Exactly,” Fenwick confirmed.

“You’d better go and get that book, Fenwick. Before the gang has a chance to—”

“We’ve seen no action from the gang members whatsoever. Not yet, anyway. The tour group is visiting as we speak and I am standing outside the royal library. As soon as I find the book, I will let you know.”

“Good luck,” said Nicki, but the butler had already clicked off.
